Japanese Room

The Japanese Room recreates the living space of an 18th century Minka styled house in Kyoto. The Room was built in Kyoto to the exact dimensions to fit the existing Cathedral of Learning classroom, and then transported disassembled to be reassembled in this location.

Two areas of the Room show the different domestic uses of space: the doma is indicated by the concrete floor, to infer that a pressed earth porch area was available for various labors; the wooden ima represents the interior where general family living occurred. Tatami mats are used in the display cases, which contain samples of calligraphy, poetry, woodblock prints, tea items, and seasonal objects.
